Conference Call Decisions |
Backing crashes |
Agree with decision. A search on "Backing (Driving)" and "Rear end collisions" would achieve needed results.
nchoudhry |
PRB: Could this term be "backing accidents"? How that fits in the TRT hierarchy, I do not know, but prevention of backing accidents has been a focus of UMTRI research. Don't those annoying beeps when a truck, etc. back up also prevent backing accidents? I don't think backing + rear end would cover the concept; a backing accident could be an offset or side crash (I actually did this backing into a cement pillar).
ST: Agree with decision to declilne. Post-coordinate Backing and Collisions instead. (The word accidents has generally been replaced by crashes in the safety literature. In the TRT crashes is a non-preferred term for collisions.) KL: Agree with ST.
AE: Agree. WSDOT uses term Collisions |
DO NOT ADD |
| Ball bank indicators |
ST: Agree with decline. Works fine as UT. Few instances in TRIS.
AE: Agree with decline |
DO NOT ADD |
Barbs |
Anne Whitney, WSDOT |
AE: Disagree with Decline. May want to Park until there is enough warrant Definition - Barbs are wide crested trapezoidal structures, typically constructed of riprap gravel, which project out from the streambank and are oriented upstream into the main flow. Barbs reduce erosion along streambanks by defelcting current into the center of the channel aiding in the protection of bridge piers and abutments. (WSDOT WA-RD 581.1) |
Discuss in Q1 (accidentally skipped on conference call) |

ST: Agree with decline
AE: Agree with decline
PRB: Why decline? |
PARK; term may have two meanings; wait to see more usage |
Carpet drag |
AE: Disagree with decline. May want to Park
Carpet drag is a type of finish for Portland Cement. See

PARK |
| Corn |
Michael Kleiber* (see note below table) |
KL: Am OK with decline, but it seem reasonable to include since Wheat (Bhkbew) is in there.
PRB: with KL. |
Add under BT: Grain, notation: Bhkbec |
| Deck machinery |
Michael Kleiber* (see note below table) |
ST: Agree with decision. Few recent TRIS records with this term.
AE: Disagree with decline. May want to PARK term has warrant outside of TRIS in the area vessels and safety

Fixed automated spray technology |
Agree that term should be declined
ST: Agree with decline. |
OK |
| High density polyethylene |
Used 98 times in TRIS in 20 years. Term is needed. An important material used in gas pipe. |
Michael Kleiber* (see note below table) |
BP 143 hits as keyword in TRIS. TRIS does cover pipelines and TRT coverage is limited in this area.
ST: How about simply Polyethylene, which is used 3 times as often, as NT to Ethylene resins? Move up for consideration as PT? |
Temporarily parked -- NTL consult materials engineer on HDPE vs. Polyethylene |
| Highway economics |
254 uses in TRIS. Term is needed. Important discipline linking Highway engineering and Economics. |
AE: DISAGREE Should either be a PT or NPT
BP: Agree with Andy heavily used in TRIS |
OK to decline -- too confusing a term |
| Horizontal curvature |
OK |
| Impaired pedestrians |
Michael Kleiber* (see note below table) |
KL: Disagree. "Impaired drivers" is a term, and there doesn't seem to be an equivalent for post-coordination. Impairment and Intoxication do not describe the same state of being. |
OK |
Invasive species |
rhouston |
AE: DISAGREE Would like to see the TRIS numbers Noxious Weeds and Invasive Species removal is an activity that our Maintenance and Operations Division does and Environmental Services has interest in.
BP: I think this is used enough to be considered in TRIS - 54 times as a keyword but 18 times in material published in 2008 or 2009 and 45 times since 2000 obviously this is current terminology
KL: Agree with AE. |
add as PT in 2010 Q1 terms; |
| Kriging |
UC Berkeley |
OK |
| Middle-aged adults |
OK |
| Oil separators |
In 50 years this term has been used in TRIS 224 times. Suggest adding. [MK comment from Q3 review cycke: "Oil separators" is not a "process". How could it be--it's a thing. "Needed to index with a TRT term the 225 records using this UT. It is obviously a type of equipment."] |
AE: Disagree. may want to PARK
ST: Agree with decision not to add. Would Oil water separators be a more precise term? What does it have to do with transportation? Few recent uses in TRIS. |
OK |
| Pedestrian scramble signals |
The requested term is Pedestrian scramble signals. May I suggest it be parked for discussion at a later time. |
Michael Kleiber* (see note below table) |
AE: Agree with MK Park |
Park |
| Polymer modified binders |
21 Uses in TRIS in last nine years. Polymers used to change asphalt binders to achieve a wider range of performance in pavements. See ASTM STP 1108 (Polymer modified asphalt binders : 1992). Suggest adding to TRT. |
Michael Kleiber* (see note below table) |
AE: Agree with MK: ADD
ST: Agree |
OK; NTL to investigate polymer modified asphalt as compared to PM binders for 2010 Q1 |
Racial profiling |
At the very least it should be parked. Concept will not go away, unfortunately. 14 uses in TRIS.
UC Berkeley |
KL: Agree with MK and park. This term belongs.
PRB: I'm in favor of adding this. Compare TRIS usage to OCLC usage. |
OK |
| Social networking |
Suggest parking. |
Michael Kleiber* (see note below table) |
AE: Agree with Kendra
ST: Agree with waiting
KL: Agree to park. It will continue to be a topic of interest, but I'm not sure where it would go in the hierarchy. |
PARK -- need consensus on where it will go in the hierarchy |
Subgrade stability |
Michael Kleiber* (see note below table) |
OK -- other terms in TRT cover ex. = "expansive clays" |
Underride guards |
Michael Kleiber* (see note below table) |
ST: Agree. Works as UT. Not enough use to add as PT. |
OK |
Voice over internet protocol |
Michael Kleiber* (see note below table) |
AE: Agree with KL
KL: Park and keep an eye on it. This will probably be more important for vehicle communications. |
PARK |
Wide base tires |

Michael Kleiber* (see note below table) |
AE: No Opinion
ST: We should keep an eye on this one. 19 instances in TRIS Online since 2005. Also called super singles. |
OK |
| Wooden ships |

AE: No Opinion |
