February 2010 (Q1) TRT Preferred Terms to Discuss

TRT Term Code Comments (NTL Team and term proposers) MK's comments Subcommittee Comments Conference Call Consensus
Accelerated bridge construction Fcfba from Sep 09 recent uncontrolled terms list     Temp Park until Q2 2010-NTL will follow up with Andy and SMEs
Animal-vehicle collisons Hbbgtca BT Collisions; Terms need to be hyphenated   AE: Should this be added? Semantic factoring indicates no. The meaning to Collision doesn't change when you add 'animal-vehicle'  I would rather see directions to use Collisions AND Vehicle AND Animal rather than the precoordination of this term. DO NOT ADD
Bridge construction Fcfb NTL added as a new facet to accommodate Accelerated bridge construction; NPT: ABC (accelerated bridge contsruction) agree with term and notation (pre-coordinated byt needed)

 BP:  Agree

Temp Park until Q2 2010-NTL will follow up with Andy and SMEs
Corridor management Cqeac BT: Access control (Transportation); suggested on the Q4 2009 conference call term review  the term I suggested was "integrated corridor management." The notation for that term would be Dcmthce as listed here [for corridor management as originally proposed by NTL before expert review]. Integrated corridor management involves traffic control on two or more facilities more or less running parallel (arterial, freeway, transit line, etc.). It is an FHWA/JPO program as well as a topic. "Corridor management" usually refers to managing access, impact mitigation, corridor preservation, etc. to the right of way of a highway. If that term is desired, a suggested notation is: Cqeac. AE: I agree with Michael. I also need some more information before making a decision. TEMP PARK for Q2 2010; ST suggested checking ramp metering as a method for access control; overall thought is that Corridor Management is broader than Access Control; ITS term; may need to appear in both places with parenthetical referenses as polyheirarchy; needs a good scope note
Diamond grinding Fmuhpt BT: Pavement maintenance agree with adding term. Since this action refers to the maintenance of pavements only. The notation should be Fmuhpt (see related terms Fmuhp…)  AE: ADD OK to ADD
Distracted driving Mxwd BT: Distraction; adapted from uncontrolled term listing of "distracted drivers"; adding in anticipation of topic becoming more prevalent

AE: What are we interested in here the activity or the driver?

BP: Agree with Andy - Should this be under distraction or drivers?

TEMP PARK for Q2 2010 for new notation under M; treat as distracted drivers (should be under "high risk drivers") and distracted driving as NPT to "distracted drivers"
Fiber reinforced polymers Rbmdysgf BT: Fiiber reinforced materials; RT: Polymers; from Sep 09 pop uncontrolled terms list needs RT2 to Polymers (Rbcts)   OK
Full-depth asphalt pavements Pmrcppbmbf BT: Asphalt pavements Term should be full-depth asphalt pavements and should have borader term: Asphalt pavements (not: Asphalt based materials) Pmrcppbmbf: Definition: An HMA pavement structure using HMA prodcuts for all components. The base material and surface courses are made of HMA instead of aggregate or other material.  BP Agree with Michael OK
General purpose lanes Pmrcpmd  BT Traffic lanes Term used only 10 times in TRIS. Don't seee the need now. Suggest parking.  AE:PARK - I find it interesting that this term is not used much in the literature. When in the context of other types of lanes, operationally,  this term is used extensively. It is a type of lane but many times assumed as is the term 'mainline'. OK
High speed rail Qbfxh swap with High speed trains due to ubiqitious and high-profile use as well as ambiguity in topic (see SME response);  RT High speed ground transportation; look at Q4 2009 research and switch for PT: high speed trains;

 AE: Agree on switch.

BP: Agree

PRB: Paul Burley does not like the tern

OK
Hull resistance Smdgh BT: Fluid resistance; from Sep 09 recent uncontrolled terms list   TEMP PARK for Q2 2010; move to a naval engineering facet
Integrated corridor management Dcmthce BT: Congestion management systems; integrated corridor management discussion at http://www.transportationresearch.gov/NTL/TRT/Research%20Wiki/November%202009%20(Q4)%20Proposed%20Preferred%20Terms.aspx  the term I suggested was "integrated corridor management." The notation for that term would be Dcmthce as listed here [for corridor management as originally proposed by NTL before expert review]. TEMP PARK for Q2 2010; deal with this term alongside Corridor Management
Internal organs Mykv swap with Viscera (make it NPT); look at Q4 2009 research and switch for PT: viscera Do not agree. See my arguments in 2009 Q4 review and the fact that Viscera is both an LCSH and a Medline authorized term. It is a mistake to use this non-standard term in its place.  AE:AGREE. Non-standard or not, it doesn't matter what LCSH or Medline uses. The audience for the TRT, LCSH and Medline are different. The question is will OUR users search using the term viscera or internal organs. My vote is internal organs. User warrant is more important than using standardized terms. The goal of a thesaurus for indexing is findability. OK
Invasive species Jcmpu BT Living things detrimental to human activity  Conceptually "Invasive species" is a BT to "Invasive plants" (in TRT as Jcmpu). If one wants to be a purist, then make "Invasive species" Jcmpu and change Invasive plants to Jcmpui. Or instead of adding Invasive species, add "Invasive animals." Then both plants and animals will be covered.  AE: I agree with MK TEMP PARK for Q2 2010; Andy will talk to biologist; NTL will look at placing invasive species and plants to "Ecosystems" facet -- JE
Legal status Csml BT: Legal factors     OK
Structural health monitoring Grs after consultation, this is inspection function; Q4 2009 discussion: http://www.transportationresearch.gov/NTL/TRT/Research%20Wiki/November%202009%20(Q4)%20Proposed%20Preferred%20Terms.aspx    OK
Vehicular ad hoc networks (Computer networks) Dsbnwv BT Vehicle to vehicle communications     PARK (for facet X resolution; could be D or X, but prob not appropriate for X)
